Toshiaki (Shunmei) Watanabe, Japanese Ink-and-Colour Painting of a Girl in Red
Ink and colour on paper, framed
£295
An original Japanese ink-and-colour painting by Toshiaki (Shunmei) Watanabe (1937–2005), depicting a stylised girl in a vivid red kimono.
Her rounded face, rosy cheeks and dark hair contrast with a turquoise-blue background, while yellow floral details and energetic brushwork give the composition a playful, expressive character. Bold Japanese calligraphy appears alongside the figure, accompanied by a red artist's seal.
The inscription includes a phrase found in other documented works by Watanabe. The wooden backing board also carries Japanese calligraphy and a second red seal, including a phrase associated with the artist's writings. These features, together with the distinctive visual style, provide strong evidence for the identification, although the individual seals have not been independently authenticated.
Presented in its existing timber frame with a muted green mount. A characterful example of Watanabe's combination of painting, poetry and calligraphy.
